Weekly Obedience Training

Event Details

This event finished on 15 April 2026

“Finished” gun dogs are not made in the training fields in the spring and summer, the foundation for a finished dog and Utility Test performance is made in your basement and garage before the snow melts!

This course is generally for dogs and handlers that are past their initial training/exposure and hunting season and Natural Ability Test, and want to learn concepts and methods to work toward becoming a “finished” gun dog team. This course is also highly recommended for any members pursuing testing at the Utility Test level, especially first-timers.

The best results will be obtained by attendees who are willing to take what they learn from this course and apply them at home on their own time in between weekly sessions.  We will help you learn how to train your own dog, but we will NOT train your dog for you.

Training Concepts covered will include:

  • How dogs think and learn – rewards, pressure, corrections and withholding
  • Why and how to use a pinch/prong collar
  • Heeling – loose leash and off leash
  • WHOA – steadiness, sit, down, stand – duration, distance and out of sight
  • Recall
  • Introduction to retrieving, positive and forced
  • E-collar tips – do’s and don’ts!
  • Utility Test expectations and handling tips.

This course is open to Northwoods NAVHDA chapter members and Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe (LLBO) members. There will be alternating sessions each night.  There will be companion dog (non-hunting dog) focused sessions and NAVDHA hunting dog focused sessions.   We are partnering with the LLBO and renting amazing indoor training space from the LLBO in Cass Lake, MN.

There is limited space, register early.

Date and time: February 18 at 6:00 – 8:15 PM and will continue every Wednesday for 9-10 weeks.
